A pupil of Jean Charles REMOND and Louis Etienne WATELET, Loisel developed a solid technique following the classical teaching of these two artists. He worked almost exclusively from nature and exhibited his paintings at the Salon from 1827 with a « View of Thiers from the road to Lyon ». Shortly thereafter, he went to Italy, staying there until 1831. He continued to exhibit Italian subjects that earned him some success with connoisseurs.

Our painting is a sensitive and sincere example of the artist’s work in France. A regular visitor to Barbizon and its surroundings, we can see on the right of the composition a chain known as a « pinchard », generally accompanied by a parasol, a common accessory of the plein air painters, which often surprised passing tourists at Fontainebleau.
