\nIn 1834, Paul \u00c9douard Baille won the first prize of the \u00c9cole des Beaux-Arts of Besan\u00e7on with “Hagar in the Desert”<\/em>. The city gave him funding to continue his studies at the Paris \u00c9cole des Beaux-Arts where he was a pupil of Fran\u00e7ois-\u00c9douard Picot. In his studio he trained artists such as F\u00e9lix-Henri Giacomotti and Jules Machard. Encouraged by his master PICOT, Baille twice prepared for the Prix de Rome exam, but failed and then reached the age limit to enter the competition. Thanks to his personal wealth he was nevertheless able to go to Italy with the painter Charles HOUEL in May 1844, first visiting Rome, then Florence, Siena, Venice, Naples and Pompei. He returned to France in August 1845.<\/h6>\n
