In 1857, Corot sent Félix Lionnet to Italy. He was received in Rome by Edgar Degas. He worked in the evenings, at the French Academy based at the Villa Medici in Rome. During these seven years of studies, drawing from the live model and copying after the old masters made Lionnet a talented academic painter alongside his fellow students Gustave Moreau, Degas, Jules-Elie Delaunay, Léon Bonnat.
